The firing of Hong Kong's noon day gun is one of the very few traditions that remians from the city's time as British colony. History and rumours all mixed together, however, most do believe the story goes something like this.
In the 1960s, Jardine's private militia would fire a gun salute to welcome the company's taipan's arrival by sea. One one occasion, a British naval officer get annoyed by this practice because such a salute was nromally reserved for government officials and senior officers of the armed services. As a result, Jardine's was ordered as a penalty to fire the gun everyday at noon.
